On Migraines

The Migraine Brain
by Carol Bernstein MD

The Migraine Brain is the basic go-to book on migraines by a doctor who suffers with migraines. She emphasizes the fact that it’s a “whole body” disease, and she does not sugar coat it. She details the need for comprehensive approach to migraine management, and and offers solid and practical advice for living with migraines.

The Body Keeps Score: Brain, Mind and Body in Healing Trauma
by Bessel van der Kolk M.D.

This book is not specifically on migraines but details insightful and immensely useful research in neuroscience, psychology and body-centered therapies. It is a beautiful and cogent blueprint for understanding and treating trauma. To further understand how our neurology impacts our quality of life, this is a must read!

Migraine
by Oliver Sacks

By a beautiful and funny writer and doctor who is a migraine sufferer himself. This book highlights the range of symptoms of migraine disease, not just focusing on a headache. It is accessible and gentle, yet informative and research-based. It was first written in 1970, and then updated twice after that.

On Yoga

Overcoming Trauma with Yoga
by David Emerson

This book. It talks about the neurology of trauma and physical approaches to re-wire ourselves. He talks specifically (although briefly) about migraine. This book began my journey into yoga as a method for healing (and I don’t say that lightly) my migraine symptoms. It changes my life each time I pick it up. It is great to pair this book with The Body Keeps Score (which is listed above). Emerson references that research in developing a yoga program to address the underlying neurology.
